Books are one of the great passions of my life, not just as reading material but also as objets d'art. So, besides the hundreds of ordinary volumes of fiction, history, philosophy and mathematics which almost squeeze us out of the apartment, I have a small but interesting collection of small press editions and livres d'artiste.
This interest was sparked as a schoolboy by the late Walter Strachan, author of The Artist and the Book in France. He owned, among other fine works, a copy of the Gide Thesee with woodcuts by Abram Krol. I was absolutely thrilled when I managed to acquire a copy of my own a couple of years ago from a dealer in Rotterdam. I have often wondered why the combination of fine art and meaningful text has flourished in France whereas the English speaking world has split between worthwhile texts illustrated by lesser artists or the creation of one off objects that stretch the very definition of book.
Some examples of my collection can be seen here.
