Nov. 14th, 2007 04:07 pmThis is a meme where you ask about people's Interests (from their eljay profile). Comment on this post, and I'll pick six of yours, and youexplain them on a post you make. Then you post this on your journal andit becomes a never ending spiral... and good fun.
intertext asked me about:
boethius
The Consolation of Philosophy is one of those books I'm always rereading. I'm not a christian of course but I still find the essentialhumanism and decency of Boethius very appealing.
danielle de niese
Drop dead gorgeous Australian/American/Sri Lankan soprano with a voice as fabulous as her body. I have a fetish for gorgeous sopranos. Yes
linzq that includes you!
marc bloch
This is the second time today I've written about Marc Bloch. He is my ideal combination of intellectual and man of action. As a historian he was enormously influential in his day. His use of a wide range of 'sources' beyond texts and archeology to cast light on historical processes was ground breaking and his works can still be read with profit by any medievalist. He was also a decorated WW1 veteran and a hero of the Resistance in the second war. His execution was one of the Gestapo's more egregious pieces of cultural vandalism.
peat bogs
I'm a child of the Pennines. Anyone who has spent much time on those bleak Northern hills knows all about peat bogs. This is probably why we spent so much time fighting the Scots. We coveted each others' peat bogs.
rucking and mauling
The basic workload of the rugby forward. The primary means by which we win control of the ball so that theflash bastards backs can show off before losing it and making us get it back again. Actually they are both skills that require a peculiar combination of precision and sheer brutality. I can't imagine how many hours I spent refining those two skills on the training field."
