Snowshoeing

I went snowshoeing yesterday with Kate.  I've never snowshoed before and I rather liked it.  It's a pretty good workout and, although one can't cover as much ground as on skis, it is much easier to get around awkward ground or narrow trails.  I was going to ski but it's been a couple of years since I last did  (so different from 20 years ago when I skied three or four times/week from Christmas to Easter) and I didn't want to aggravate any of the not quite healed injuries that skiing could easily have put a real strain on.  I think there may be snowshoes in my future.

Were they the old fashioned "tennis racket" kind?

No, they were Salomon metal and plastic ones.

I've always felt that I would like snowshoing, since I like both hiking and cross-country skiing so much.

I like snowshoeing a lot, but I have to assume it's easier here, since we have decent parks in walking distance.

One advantage over x/c skiing is that [livejournal.com profile] roverthedog thinks ski poles look like fun toys, and you don't need poles to snowshoe.

I'm a huge fan of snowshoes, for mobility reasons; simply put, they let you go places you simply can't on skis. And they handle hills, both ascending and descending, far better than skis. And you don't need poles.

I love skis, but from a practical point of view snowshoes are superior in every area but speed.

Snowshoeing burns more calories per hour than almost any other activity. If you're going over undulating terrain at a decent clip, you can burn 400-500 cal/hour.

It's really, really, my favorite outdoor activity after canoeing. My housemate informed me we had snow on the ground before I left MN for IN. But as I was driving back, the temps here got up above 50deg/F. So, no snow... *sad*

We definitely picked the right day to go. The day before it was -15C and windy, the following day it was drizzling and full on thaw.
