Emilia di Liverpool
Gianna di Calais

You will be delighted to know that a Liverpool is a beautiful city set in a dramatic Alpine landscape a few leagues from London.

Good lord. I just had to take a wild guess because ... WTF??

I had just been listening to a description of the 'plot' of EdL on my iPod. It included Claudio di Liverpool being sold into slavery in Africa for political crimes and the evil Dom Remualdo, travelling incognito as a Colonel Sir Thomson, having his coach overturned in the mountain torrents of the Mersey.

This is officially the first time I got 100% on one of your polls.

Good Lord. I gather he also wrote
Il castello di Kenilworth
- part of his Scott fixation, no doubt. He does seem to have had an obsession with this country, without a great deal of knowledge to back it up.

Yes that's the one in which the Earl of Leicester mysteriously becomes Alberto Dudley

Guesswork, again.

Dramatic Robert McAlpine landscape?

Is Gianna di Calais in any way related to Joan of Arc? (well, bad Brits in either case...)

It isn't but L'assedio di Calais features Ed3 being unpleasant to burghers.

Emilia di Liverpool was the only one I've heard of; there's been a recent production.

Not much worse than some of the howlers that sometimes turn up in fanfic.

Yes, that was the one I recognised, having read the recent reviews. I hesitated over Rosanna di Antwerpen, because I reckoned at least one of the non-British ones might be for real.

Liverpool (or, as Donizetti's later revised version spells it, Liwerpool) is presumably a lot more exotic if you've never been there. Well, it would have to be, really.
