I reffed the Nomads 3rds vs the Beach 3rds this afternoon. As i was asked to do the game at the last minute i was bit surprised to find (at half-time) that it was being videoed and that I was being assessed by one of the provincial referee coaches. Apparently I did quite well for a first game. There is, of course, stuff to work on but the basics were sound. The players were nice about it too afterwards which is good because I think whether the players think the ref has made the game better or worse is more important than strict technical accuracy. Also I made one of the rarest calls in the game. I pinged one of the sides for not lowering the line out jumper safely. It's a free kick offence as I made clear to the players but that didn't stop the Nomads' scrum half from being confused enough to hoof the ball straight into touch.
