So, I realized just this week that I probably have a mistaken impression of how dangerous rugby is, because almost all of the rugby I've seen is women's rugby. Every single rugby match I've ever seen has included someone being injured. But this article (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/11/magazine/11Girls-t.html?ref=magazine) tells me that women injure themselves a lot more in that kind of sport than men do. How common are injuries for men in rugby?
Minor injuries are routine; cuts, bruises, muscle strains. More serious ones are rarer but not uncommon; ligament injuries, fractures, minor concussion, I probably missed an average of two to three games per season with that sort of injury. Catastrophic injuries; death, paralysis, are rare. It's something like one catastrophic injury per million player game which equates to about one per year worldwide.
I have a vague memory that I once read that there were more injuries per rugby player than in any other form of sport in the UK. But I don't remember how many that was, or how serious the injuries were. Just that I was left with the impression that it was dangerous!
