book arts

I've posted lots about my book collection including scads of pictures. It's a passion dating from school days.

hammer horror

I love cheesy horror films. That includes classics like Brides of Dracula and The Masque of the red Dearth. If you haven't seen it may I recommend Burial of the rats?

invented traditions

I'm sure I've explained this one before. It's a concept developed by Hobsbawm and Roper to cover those things whikch are assumed to be of ancient origin but aren't, usually turning out to be 19th or early 20th century inventions. Examples would include Scots pseudo highlandry, Welsh bardic nonsense and the ceremony for crowning a British monarch.

lost causes

I'm English and a socialist.

necessary redundancy

This is a concept in complexity theory. A self adapting system has to have excess capacity. If it is operating at 100% capacity it has no capacity for new activity which is, of course, essential to adaptation. So, if you want a system to innovate you must build in redundancy to allow for more than one way of doing things. This idea is anathema to bureaucrats.

shostakovich

For my money, any list of the truly great and enduring composers of the 20th century would feature Shostakovich very high on the list. Certainly as a symphonist he stands head and shoulders above the rest and his string quartets are sublime.

st lawrence market

My local market and one of the great food markets anywhere. It has real butchers and poulterers, bakers people who mong fish and cheese, assorted specialty food outlets and so on. Whether you are after duPuy lentils, caribou steaks or obscure Spanish cheeses it's the place to go.

I have a shiny new copy of the Hobsbawm book on my to-read shelf, and I'm very much looking forward to digging into it. ^_^

I'm glad necessary redundancy came from complexity theory and not a downsizing report....

Oh, and this is me commenting.
