Mr. Harper, in order to defend democracy, wants the Governor General to suspend parliament. I think he'd go down well in Thailand.

And I have to bloody vote for someone on Monday in the (entirely overshadowed by this circus) provincial election.

That seems to be the general consensus. I hope she says no.

We have a minority government (Conservative). It recently introduced a package of legislation which galvanised the opposition into forming a coalition. They have tabled a motion of no confidence which is scheduled to be debated on Monday. THe PM has said that if the government loses the vote he will ask the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call new elections (Last election was only a few months ago and produced much the same result as an election 18 months before that) The leaders of the coalition parties have written to the GG saying that they are prepared to form a government which will have the support of the Commons. The PM is describing this as an undemocratic and anti-Canadian coup because the coalition will be supported by the separatist Bloc Quebecois. He has asked the GG to prorogue Parliament so that the motion of no confidence cannot be debated. The GG is noe in the constitutional hotseat.
