"Philip VI's doctor Guy of Vigevano's recipe for slug soup was a serious prescription for the avoidance of poisoning on crusade."

Christopher Tyerman, God's War: A New History of the Crusades, London 2006.

It's on p828 in the Penguin edition.

Slug preparations have also been used as preventatives against scurvy.

If they were both on the menu, I think I might choose the poison :p

Me too. I did wonder whether the doctor possibly had an evil sense of humour.

For the most part yes. The reviews basically indicate that it replaces Runciman as the standard text. It's engagingly written and occasionally Tyerman turns a LOL worthy phrase. The only real downside is that it is very long and the subject matter is intrinsically quite hard to get one's head around so it's not an "easy read".
