The dialect meme
Dec. 7th, 2003 12:20 pmHere's the dialect meme that is doing the rounds with some additions. Where it is different I have included what I think my parents' answer would be in italics:
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks? Stream, brook or creek - stream
2. What the thing you push around the grocery store? Shopping cart - shopping trolley
3. A metal container to carry a meal in? No idea
4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in? Frying pan
5. The piece of furniture that seats three people? Sofa, couch - settee
6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof? Gutter
7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening? Porch
8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages? Pop or soda - pop
9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup? Pancake - flapjack
10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself? A sub, I guess but I've eaten po' boys, pan bagna and other variations- I doubt the parents have ever seen one
11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach? Swimming trunks
12. Shoes worn for sports?, Rugger boots, football boots, soccer shoes, tennis shoes, plimsolls, running shoes, trainers, runners
13. Putting a room in order? ???
14. A flying insect that glows in the dark? Firefly, Glow-worm
15. The little insect (arthropod) that curls up into a ball? Woodlouse
16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down? Seesaw
17. How do you eat your pizza? Fingers - knife and fork if at all
18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff? Garage sale
19. What's the evening meal? Dinner - not sure anymore, was once tea

20. Passage that runs between two rows of houses? Lane, Alley, Snicket
21. Bit of roadway where pedestrians walk? Pavement, Sidewalk - pavement
22. Place where pedestrians cross road? cross walk - pedestrian crossing
23. Undeveloped part of the country? bush, back country - countryside
24. Recreational walking in the above? backpacking, hiking hiking
25. Eleven a side version of football played with a round ball? soccer - football
26. Eleven a side version of football played with an oval ball? (American) football - American or NFL football
27. Small watercraft propelled by a double bladed paddle? kayak
28. Small watercraft propelled by a single bladed paddle? canoe
29. Large body of salt water? The ocean - the sea
Regionality information: born in Lancashire as were parents and grandparents; brought up (raised?!) in Cheshire, Yorkshire and Hertfordshire. University in Durham. Currently living in Ontario where I have been for 20 years. Married for 10 years to an Australian and now living with a Californian.
