I've just acquired one of the new tiny iPod Shuffles. It's the size of s tie clip. Holds 4GB of stuff, which is a hell of a lot of MP3s, and, for the first time on a Shuffle has a useable way of navigating though I fear that may take some getting used to. It really is rather impressive.

I <3 future shock. I speak as one who started off with a wind-up gramophone and 78s. The key quote here is Bernard Levin saying that what dates people is those who twitch every 7 1/2 minutes listening to music, because that is the point at which they had to get up and turn the record over.

I'm post 78s but do remember the 'fun' of trying to set a turntable up just right so that it would play extra demanding records like Solti's Mahler 8 properly.

Me too, but bring on the future! I look forward to having implants...

I don't even think ours were 78's. They were heavy, breakable, one-sided, and the sound was hardly recognizable. We also have a music box upstairs that plays a variety of metal discs, but in my early days, we were at least beyond that.

OOh! Can you make playlists on it? Or at least download them from iTunes? The shuffle we have just plays everything, in order or shuffled.

That's the point. You can have play lists. There's a gizmo on the right earbud cable that serves as a volume control and navigator. If you hold it down for a couple of seconds it reads through your play lists. When you hear the one you want, you click and voila! The mechanism is to set up in iTunes which play lists you want to be on the iPod. It then synchs. You can also just load a bunch of suff like the old shuffle but why would you? Besides with 4GB you really need navigation.

Sounds wonderful. I have a huge iPod Classic with a little movie screen, and it's not comfortable to wear when I'm walking, but the little Shuffle wasn't flexible enough. I'll have to look at that one.

The thing was pretty cheap too. $99 Cdn is not a lot to pay for something that sophisticated.

it's almost scary how cool that thing is

I know. It's one of the most innovative UIs I've come across. So far it seems quite easy to use. (Unlike my phone where setting up playlists is very difficult and playing back from them mysterious indeed.)

are you also using Genius in iTunes?

It really is Genius, especially for a Shuffle

Hee! i never made the tie clip connection; now I'm imagining certain MPPs using them as such. I'm highly amused. (I can even imagine which ones would use which colours, and of course, some would have multiple ones to colour co-ordinate. ^_^)
