Blu-Ray

I'm definitely warming to the idea of BluRay but there's a snag. Our existing Home Theatre set up is not HDMI capable. This means several things. If I wanted to take advantage of e.g. Dolby HD I'd need a BluRay player with 7.1 analogue output to feed my pre HDMI receiver. The player still wouldn't be able to upsample standard DVDs though as the TV is also pre HDMI. And, not least, the additional cabling would be a bit gruesome.

Possible strategies include replacing the receiver and TV. They are both 8 years old so have seen decent service. This would also allow us to go flat screen saving a chunk of footprint. The downside of course is that instead of spending $500 on a BluRay player we would be looking at maybe six grand. A second option would be just add a BluRay player and not worry about the newer audio formats. Option 3 would be the 7.1 analogue option though frankly I think that's a bit daft. Lots of cables and more expensive player for marginal benefit. Option 4 is to sit tight and wait for both BluRay and flat screen prices to drop a bit more and for wireless connection and other useful network related things to become more stable and widely available.

Being me, I shall probably wait.

I went for the Blu Ray plus new screen option. I haven't upgraded my amp, or bought three new speakers. Yet.
I think the player+screen combination gets you maybe 60% of the way there, and I could probably get 80/20 if I buy a new subwoofer to replace the broken one.

Trouble is player plus screen is also 80% of the cost. New receiver or prepro + amps is not the big ticket.

Hmm, I did the screen plus player for about £700 - I think changing amps would be around that, plus about £300-£500 for speakers, so I guess I'm closer to 60/40. Of course, I've gone for a Samsung screen and player, so not top of the range.

Thing is I'm looking at replacing a 60" 4:3 rear projection set soI think I'm looking at a 55" 16:9 screen

Yup - I settled for a 42" - I was forbidden to go for the 52".
