My stehplatz experiment was a complete failure.  The seat in front of me was empty and the usher offered it to me on condition I give it back if the ticket holder eventually arrived.  S/he didn't.  It was an excellent seat; on the aisle in the fifth row of Ring 3.  It had a notional price of $185.  I paid $12.  L'Amour du Loin was well worth a second look.  I win at opera.
