Last night while walking home from the opera house we ran into the two largest, most bad ass raccoons I have ever seen (and I've seen a few). It was on the corner of Front and George so absolutely downtown core. They were the size of medium sized dogs and were casually rooting among the bins outside Pagnanelli's. I confess I crossed the road rapidly as soon as the light changed. It's Nuit Blanche tonight so there will be people randomly scattering food remains around the city all night. I wonder if the racclans are gathering. Come to think of it maybe Nuit Blanche was their idea in the first place.

Toronto, apparently, is the raccoon capital of the world. The density of the raccoon population is greater than any other urban area and way higher than any rural area. Why this is is not totally clear though access to Rob Ford's left over KFC is probably a major factor. In any event, the 2012 documentary, Raccoon Nation, broadcast on CBC and PBS and now available on DVD, explores the lifestyle of urban raccoons in Toronto and looks at how they are evolving (rapidly) to adapt to the challenges of an urban lifestyle. It also takes a brief look at emigré raccoon populations in Germany and Japan.

I love raccoons and find them utterly fascinating. I also think that they are a strong candidate to out evolve humans over time. Watch this fascinating documentary and see if you agree.
