On a routine voyage from Solar Base III to Alpha Centauri a space cruiser develops serious technical problems. Eventually the crew is forced to resort to cannibalism. Hundreds of years later the ship is found drifting in space. In the ship's log the captain has meticulously recorded the crew's last days, including full details of the menu.

Mid 19th century. The Sacred Meerkat of Swat has been carried off by Pushtun raiders. The Akoond is distraught. An unlikely band made up of a young British officer, a swami, a Muslim imam, a traveller in haberdashery from Manchester and a woman disguised as a sailor swear to restore the Meerkat to the Akoond. Derring Do ensues.

Three kittens set out on a quest to destroy a "ring of power" by tossing it into the volcanic heart of Mount Doom, which is located somewhere near Grantham, Lincs. They must battle through three volumes of implausible complexity, faux erudition and thinly veiled analogy to reach their goal. Finally, if the reader gets this far, they find that the darl lord, Moron, has hired a Scottish investment banker to run Mount Doom. He has closed it down, made the orcs redundant and built a giant car park and several warehouses that nobody wants. The kittens decise it is time for a nap.

Literacy has dclined almost to extinction. What remains of the "meeja" is largely concerned with the doings of the various fictional characters of its corporately sponsored programmes. A few rebellious spirits set up self contained communities in remote areas where a handful of dedicated souls write a chronicle that they hope may enlighten future ages.
