That ODI

I just watched the highlights of the 5th ODI between South Africa and Australia. Extraordinary! Australia posted an extraordinary 434-4 in their 50 overs and lost. Every batting record imaginable was smashed; two highest team scores ever, most sixes in a match, most fours in a match etc. What impressed me though was that there was comparatively little slogging. I was expecting a 100 overs of 20/20 but, in fact, most of the runs were scored by good, genuine cricket shots. It's not like me ever to fee sorry for an Australian but one has to have some sympathy for Nathan Bracken. On a day when 870 runs were scored, figures of 5 for 67 are remarkably good so to finish on the losing side is a bit of a bummer.

Other than the headlines and scores, I missed the details of the match. But it sounds a fascinating game - it would have been great to be in the crowd.

What I find really interesting is that the test match - currently on - is relatively low scoring (SA 205 all out; Aus 308 ao). So what was so special - or different - about that one day match?

So what was so special

The pitch was a belter and the outfield was lightning fast so the batsman could play their shots and if they got much bat on it at all it was away.

Ponting and Gibbs played out of their skins and got good support from Katich and Smith.
