Can I just say that the word 'ontologizing' is vile and disgusting? It's bad enough that the IT world has hijacked 'ontology' to mean a controlled vocabulary crossed with an entity relationship diagram but to turn it into a verb is beyond unspeakable.

Please help. I used the word "hegemonising" the other day. I feel soiled. Substitute words gratefully accepted.

I think you should translate the offending sentence into Welsh and then translate it back again

As I believe they say in certain parts of North America, "there ain't no noun that can't be verbed".

Those would be the suit-wearing parts.

Hah.

And what's this business with the word "ain't" being considered mainstream amerkin? It's not even as common here as the "innit" thing is in the UK, as far as I can tell. It's like saying that all British people say "wot wot."

Gawd bless yer, Mary Poppins. Innit.

This may well be true. May I suggest as an example "corried"; what happens to aging back row forwards who lack pace. It certainly happened to me!

Age goes up = shirt number goes down. It's the law. Or at least a tradition, or old charter, or something.

Indeed! Although to be fair my shirt number stared at 2 in 1968 and has only gone back that low on comparatively rare occasions

I hate it when people start unspeakablising.

Do tell how "ontologizing" was used... Forewarned is forearmed.
(Last week I wrote a blurb about what you might really need when someone has turned you on to ontologies: a thesaurus or a data model, most likely.)

In this case it was, I think, a rules engine being applied to data coming in from different sources to determine what the possible valid uses for the data were. So a mother could be the parent of a diabetic child who takes insulin but a child could not be the parent of a diabetic insulin who takes mother.

I ... I don't know what to say. What in the hell is 'ontologizing'? What is 'ontology' outside of philosophy? I am sooooo behind the times on the latest technobabble, clearly.

Clearly, it's the process of making something ontologized; although that only works if it's ontologizable in the first place. I wonder if there's a test to determine something's degree of ontologizability?

Thanks for explaining the IT definition. I had a tech person start talking aobut ontologies and as a former epistemologist, was totally confused. (Then he got talking about "developing ontologies" and I was like um, by definition, can you really develop an ontology per se?)

I await the day I hear "Ontogenizing is phylogenizing on a recapitular go-forward basis."

What's really funny is that most of the people who bang on about ontologies in the IT world have no idea that the word has another meaning.

Just remember: it's not the verbing that weirds words; it's the renounification.
